School Caretaker
Location: OX14
Salary: £13.75
Hours: 2:00PM – 10:00PM (30 min lunch break unpaid) Temp to Perm
We are looking for a practical and hands-on School Caretaker to maintain the security, safety, and upkeep of the academy. You will work independently, using initiative to solve problems, fix minor issues, and ensure the site is safe, clean, and operational for staff, pupils, and visitors.

We are looking for a practical and hands-on School Caretaker to maintain the security, safety, and upkeep of the academy. You will work independently, using initiative to solve problems, fix minor issues, and ensure the site is safe, clean, and operational for staff, pupils, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Security & Access
- Lock and unlock school buildings and areas, particularly after contractors have left.
- Conduct regular security checks and respond to alarms when needed.
- Liaise with contractors, police, and security personnel as required.
- Undertake minor repairs and maintenance, including fixing furniture, plumbing, lighting, and door hardware.
- Carry out routine decorating or upkeep projects as needed.
- Operate heating, lighting, and cooling systems to ensure site comfort.
- Inspect the site regularly, identify issues, and take initiative to resolve them.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene across the site, including emergency cleaning duties.
- Keep pathways and outdoor areas safe, litter-free, and gritted/salted in winter.
- Manage waste and ensure consumables (soap, towels) are stocked.
- Promote health and safety across the site, especially in higher-risk areas such as toilets, drains, and car parks.
- Undertake safety audits and report issues promptly.
- Work independently and take initiative to solve problems.
- Assist with portering duties, moving furniture or equipment as required.
- Support the Premises Manager with daily operational tasks.
- Comply with safeguarding, child protection, confidentiality, and data protection policies.
- Participate in training and development as required.
- Practical and hands-on, able to “get stuck in” and work independently.
- Technical skills for minor repairs and maintenance.
- Ability to work alone and use initiative.
- Understanding of health and safety procedures.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Basic IT literacy.
- Full driving licence.
- Must have or be willing to obtain Enhanced DBS clearance.
- Experience in a school or educational environment.
- First Aid training or willingness to undertake it.
